MID-YEAR MONEY CHECK-IN: 6 NUMBERS TO REVIEW BEFORE LABOUR DAY

Updated: Aug 3

Published: July 14, 2026 | The Money Wise | themoneywise.ca

No spreadsheets required, just 15 minutes and these six numbers.

We're officially past the halfway mark of 2026. Before the back-to-school chaos hits and fall bills start piling up, let's do a quick, no-judgment check-in on your money. Grab a coffee (or your cottage lemonade 🍋), this takes about 15 minutes, and you don't need a single spreadsheet.

WHY A MID-YEAR CHECK-IN MATTERS

Most of us only look closely at our finances twice a year: tax season, and maybe a panicked scroll through our banking app in December. But money habits drift quietly over six months, a subscription creeps in, a credit card balance grows, an emergency fund gets raided for a summer trip.

None of that is a crisis. It's just normal life. But catching it in July is a lot easier than catching it in December, when the holidays add pressure and less time to fix things.

Think of this like a car tune-up: a 15-minute check now can save you a much bigger repair bill later. Here are the six numbers worth a look before September rolls in.

1. YOUR NET WORTH (ASSETS MINUS DEBTS)

Add up what you own; chequing and savings balances, investments, RRSP/TFSA values, your home if you own one, then subtract what you owe: credit cards, lines of credit, car loans, mortgage balance.

You're not aiming for a perfect number. You're looking for a direction. Has it moved up since January? Even a small increase is a sign your habits are working. If it's flat or down, that's useful information too, not a verdict on your worth as a person, just a data point.

Quick way to do this: open your banking app, your investment account, and your credit card app side by side. Ten minutes, one napkin calculation.

2. TFSA AND RRSP CONTRIBUTION ROOM USED

Log into your CRA My Account and check your remaining TFSA and RRSP room for 2026. A lot of Canadians set a January intention to "max it out this year" and then life happens.

If you're behind, you have options:

  • Set up a small automatic transfer for the rest of the year (even $50–$100/paycheque adds up)

  • Wait for a bonus or tax refund and do a lump sum

  • Adjust the goal, partial progress still beats none

There's no penalty for catching up later in the year, so this is genuinely a low-stress check.

3. EMERGENCY FUND STATUS

Do you have 3–6 months of essential expenses set aside; rent/mortgage, groceries, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments? If you're self-employed or have irregular income, aim closer to 6 months.

Summer is notorious for quietly draining this fund; road trips, patio season, a wedding or two. If yours dipped, mid-year is the ideal moment to start rebuilding before the higher-spending holiday season arrives on top of it.

4. SUBSCRIPTION AND RECURRING EXPENSE AUDIT

Pull up your last two bank and credit card statements and scan every recurring charge line by line. This is consistently the fastest win in any money check-in, most people find somewhere between $30 and $100 a month in subscriptions they forgot they had or no longer use.

A few common culprits: streaming services you doubled up on, app trials that auto-renewed, a gym membership from a January resolution, old software subscriptions.

Action step: cancel or downgrade at least one thing today. Redirect that amount straight into your TFSA or emergency fund so it doesn't just quietly get absorbed into spending.

5. DEBT BALANCES AND INTEREST RATES

If you're carrying credit card debt, a line of credit, or a variable-rate loan, check the current interest rate against what it was in January. Rates shift, and even a small change matters when it's compounding against you.

If you're paying 19%+ on a credit card balance, a balance transfer card or consolidation loan could meaningfully cut what you're paying in interest over the second half of the year. If you're on a variable mortgage, this is also a good moment to sanity-check where you'd land on renewal.

6. PROGRESS ON YOUR 2026 MONEY GOAL

Whatever you set out to do this year, pay off a card, save for a trip, build an investing habit, start an emergency fund from scratch - check in on it honestly.

No guilt, just information. You've got roughly four to five months left in the year to adjust course if you're behind, or to set a stretch goal if you're ahead of schedule.

Person budgeting at a wooden desk with laptop charts, coffee mug, and notebook listing savings and debt goals; calm focus.
Organizing finances for a successful mid-year review, this cozy setup includes a steaming cup of coffee, a detailed budget notebook, and a laptop displaying financial graphs. Perfect for crafting strategic savings plans and reviewing investment portfolios in a tranquil work environment.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

You don't need to overhaul your entire financial life in one sitting. Pick the one number above that surprised you most, and take one small action on it this week, cancel a subscription, set up an automatic TFSA transfer, or just write your net worth number down somewhere you'll see it again in December.

Small, consistent check-ins beat one big overwhelming overhaul every time.

FAQ

Do I need to do this exact same check every quarter?

A full check twice a year (January and July) is usually enough for most people. A lighter monthly glance at your bank balance and subscriptions keeps things from drifting too far in between.

What if my numbers look worse than January?

That's genuinely common, especially after a summer of travel and patio season. The point of this exercise isn't to judge where you are, it's to catch it early enough to course-correct before year-end.
