Important Tax Deadlines in April 2026: Ensure all personal income tax filings and payments are completed by April 30, with special provisions for self-employed individuals to file by June 15.

Why Filing on Time Matters - Even If You Can't Pay

This is the most important principle of tax season, and it's worth repeating: file on time even if you can't pay your full balance.

Here's why it matters so much:

Situation

What Happens

File on time, owe taxes, can't pay in full

Interest accrues on balance - no late filing penalty

File late, owe taxes

5% of balance owing penalty, day 1. Plus 1% per month, up to 12 months

File late, no balance owing

No penalty - but benefits and credits may be delayed

Repeat late filer with prior penalties

10% penalty immediately + 2%/month up to 20 months

The penalty for filing late when you owe is steep and immediate. The interest on an unpaid balance is far less damaging than the penalty on an unfiled return. File first, arrange payment second.

Your Complete April 2026 Filing Checklist

Work through this checklist before you file. Check each item off as you go.

STEP 1 - Gather All Your Tax Slips

  • T4 - from every employer you worked for in 2025

  • T4A - pension, retirement income, CERB repayments, scholarships, other income

  • T4E - Employment Insurance benefits

  • T5 - interest income, dividends from Canadian corporations

  • T3 - mutual fund, ETF, or trust distributions

  • T5008 - proceeds from securities transactions (stocks, bonds sold)

  • T4RSP / T4RIF - RRSP or RRIF withdrawals or income

  • T2202 - tuition certificate (students)

  • T4A(OAS) / T4A(P) - Old Age Security / CPP benefits

  • Any foreign income slips (convert to CAD at Bank of Canada rates)

Missing a slip? Log into CRA My Account at canada.ca/cra-login, issuers are required to file copies with the CRA, which often appear in your account even before the paper copy arrives.

STEP 2 - Collect Your Receipts

  • RRSP contribution receipts (contributions made Mar 3, 2025 - Mar 2, 2026)

  • Charitable donation receipts (official receipts from registered charities only)

  • Medical expense receipts - prescription drugs, dental, vision, physiotherapy, more

  • Childcare expense receipts -  daycare, after-school programs, camps

  • Home office expense records - if you have a T2200 from your employer

  • Moving expense documentation - if you moved 40+ km closer to work or school

  • Professional development and licensing fee receipts

  • Investment records - ACB calculations for any securities sold in 2025

STEP 3 - Choose Your Filing Method

  • NETFILE (CRA-certified software) - fastest, most accurate, recommended for most Canadians. Software options include TurboTax, Wealthsimple Tax (free), UFile, H&R Block, and SimpleTax. Use Auto-fill My Return to import your slips directly.

  • EFILE through a tax professional - a certified tax preparer or CPA files on your behalf using the CRA's EFILE system.

  • Paper filing - mailed to your CRA tax centre. Not recommended, slower processing, higher error risk, no instant confirmation of receipt.

💡 Use Auto-fill My Return

Through CRA-certified software, Auto-fill My Return imports your slips directly from CRA. Available from late February once issuers have filed. It reduces errors, saves time, and ensures no slips are missed.

STEP 4 - Verify Your Personal Information

  • Name matches your SIN exactly

  • Address is current (update in CRA My Account if you've moved)

  • Marital/common-law status is accurate as of December 31, 2025

  • Spouse's net income is ready (required for benefit calculations)

  • Direct deposit is set up in CRA My Account

STEP 5 - Review for Credits and Deductions

  • Basic Personal Amount - claimed automatically by most software

  • RRSP deduction - from your contribution receipts

  • Charitable donations - claim amounts over $200 at the highest credit rate

  • Medical expenses - claim amounts exceeding the lesser of $2,635 or 3% of net income

  • Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) - for low-to-moderate income earners

  • Disability Tax Credit (DTC) - if applicable (may require Form T2201)

  • Home Buyers' Amount - if you purchased your first home in 2025

  • Childcare expenses - claim for eligible care for children under 16

  • Tuition (T2202) - for eligible students or transfer to a family member

  • Northern Residents Deduction - if you lived in a prescribed northern zone

STEP 6 - NETFILE and Confirm

  • File via CRA-certified software using NETFILE

  • You'll receive a NETFILE confirmation number - save this

  • CRA typically sends a Notice of Assessment within 2 weeks for electronic filers

  • Check your CRA My Account for status updates and your assessment

🕐 NETFILE Availability (2026)

NETFILE for the 2025 tax year opens in February 2026. The NETFILE service is typically available 21 hours per day (closed 3am–6am ET for maintenance). It remains open until January 23, 2027 for late filers.

Confirmation: After successfully submitting, your software will display a NETFILE confirmation number. This is your proof of filing, keep it.

Common Last-Minute Issues - and How to Handle Them

Issue

What to Do

Missing a slip

Check CRA My Account, slips are often available there. If still missing, estimate based on records and note it on your return.

Software errors on NETFILE

Check CRA's certified software list at canada.ca. Use a different browser, or clear your cache. Call your software's support line.

Can't find old receipts

Check your email (many pharmacies, charities send digital receipts). Call your provider for a summary. If unavailable, claim only what you can document.

Return rejected by CRA

Common reasons: SIN mismatch, marital status error, or a duplicate return. Fix the flagged field and resubmit.

CRA My Account locked out

Call CRA at 1-800-959-8281 to restore access. Set up a Sign-In Partner (bank credentials) for faster future access.

What to Do If You Can't Pay Your Tax Bill

This is more common than you'd think, and the CRA has a structured process for it. Don't let a balance owing stop you from filing on time.

Your Options:

  • Pay what you can now - even a partial payment stops interest from accruing on that portion. Every dollar paid by April 30 saves you interest.

  • Set up a payment arrangement - call the CRA Collections section at 1-888-863-8657 or log into CRA My Account to set up a pre-authorized payment plan. The CRA will work with you on a timeline.

  • Interest relief 0 - in cases of financial hardship, the CRA's Taxpayer Relief Provisions allow for interest and penalty cancellation or reduction. This is not automatic and requires an application (Form RC4288).

📞 CRA Payment Arrangement Contact Info

Phone: 1-888-863-8657 (Individual Collections)

Online: CRA My Account > Payments > Payment Arrangement

Hours: Monday–Friday, 7am–11pm ET; Saturday 7am–11pm ET (tax season)

Have your SIN, return details, and a proposed payment plan ready before calling

⚠️ Interest on Unpaid Balances

CRA charges compound daily interest on unpaid balances at the prescribed rate + 4%. For Q2 2026, this is approximately 7% annualized. The longer the balance remains unpaid, the more expensive it becomes, set up a payment arrangement as early as possible.

Post-Filing Steps: What Happens Next

  1. Watch for your Notice of Assessment (NOA), it usually arrives within 2 weeks by NETFILE, 8 weeks by mail. It confirms your tax owing or refund and your updated RRSP contribution room.

  2. Review your NOA carefully, check that all income, deductions, and credits were applied as expected. If there's a discrepancy, you have 90 days from the date of assessment to file a formal objection (Form T400A).

  3. Set up or confirm direct deposit. If you didn't do it before filing, do it now for faster refunds on any future notices.

  4. Keep all your documents for 6 years, your 2025 records should be retained until at least December 31, 2031.

  5. Mark your calendar for 2027, set a recurring reminder for April 30. Better yet, start your 2026 folder now.
