The Money Wise introduces a practical series to help Canadians move from debt stress to clarity, confidence and a stronger financial future.

Introduction
Debt has a way of becoming bigger than a number. It can affect how you sleep, what you say yes to, the purchases you postpone, the opportunities you avoid and even how you feel about yourself.
You may know exactly how much you owe. Or you may have reached the point where you would rather not look.
Maybe you are making the minimum payments every month and wondering why the balance barely moves. Maybe you have several cards, a line of credit and a loan, and keeping track of everything feels like a second job. Maybe your credit score has taken a hit and you are not sure what to do next.
Or maybe you are simply tired of feeling like your money is always catching up to yesterday.
If any of that sounds familiar, this new series is for you.
Welcome to Debt & Credit Reset, a new series from The Money Wise designed to help you look at debt and credit differently and more importantly, help you take practical steps forward.

This Is Not Another “Stop Spending” Lecture
There is a lot of debt advice online that sounds like this:
“Make a budget.”
“Stop buying things.”
“Cut your coffee.”
“Just pay more.”
Those suggestions can have a place. But they do not tell the whole story.
Debt is not always the result of irresponsible spending. Sometimes it follows a job loss, a business setback, a major life transition, an emergency, a relationship change, a period of supporting family, or simply a long stretch where expenses were higher than income.
And even when spending habits are part of the problem, shame is not a strategy.
What you need is clarity.
You need to know what you owe, what the debt is costing you, which options are available, what could help your credit, and which moves could actually make the situation worse. That is the approach we are taking with Debt & Credit Reset.
No shame.
No magic fixes.
No “one size fits all” answer.
Just practical money education and decisions grounded in your actual numbers.
The Reset Starts With Clarity
Before you can build a debt payoff plan, you need a complete picture of the debt you are carrying. That means getting the real balance, interest rate and minimum payment for every debt, not the number you remember from three months ago.
This matters because the interest rate on a debt can dramatically change how quickly your money creates progress. A $4,200 credit card balance at 19.99%, for example, represents roughly $70 of monthly interest before considering principal reduction. The point is not to scare you with the number. The point is to make the cost visible.
You cannot build a good strategy around numbers you have not actually looked at.
The Money Wise debt framework starts with that principle: clarity before strategy.
Once you know your numbers, you can begin asking better questions:
Which debt is costing me the most?
How much can I realistically put toward debt each month?
Would changing the interest rate materially improve my situation?
Is consolidation actually cheaper or does it simply make the payment look smaller?
What is happening with my credit?
Do I need a payoff strategy, a restructuring option, credit counselling, or professional insolvency advice?
Those are much better questions than, “What is the fastest debt hack?”

Debt Freedom Is More Than Paying the Balance Down
One of the biggest ideas behind this series is that debt freedom and financial freedom are connected, but they are not exactly the same thing.
Getting a balance to $0 is a major win. But if nothing changes after that, it is possible to end up back in the same place.
That is why the reset has several layers:
1. Pay off debt.
Build a realistic plan to reduce what you owe and control the interest that is working against you.
2. Understand and rebuild credit.
Your credit profile can influence your ability to access borrowing and other financial opportunities. Understanding what affects it gives you more control.
3. Reset the money habits behind the numbers.
A payoff plan is stronger when it changes the behaviour and cash-flow patterns that created the debt in the first place.
4. Build the future.
Once expensive debt is under control, the cash flow that used to service debt can eventually be redirected toward an emergency fund, investing, goals and long-term wealth.
That progression is important.
We are not trying to move you from “I owe money” to “I owe less money.” We are trying to move you from:
Debt → Clarity → Control → Stability → Freedom
That is the reset.
What We’ll Cover
Over the next two months, we are going to take this one decision at a time.
1. Negotiating Credit Card Debt in Canada
Your credit card interest rate may feel like a fixed fact, but there are situations where it can be worth asking the issuer about a lower rate, fee reversal or hardship accommodation.
The key is knowing what to ask for, how to prepare, and when negotiation is actually appropriate. We will walk through the process, including the conversation you can have with your card issuer without pretending there is a magic phrase that guarantees a “yes.”
And if the answer is no? We will talk about the next lever you can control.
2. Debt Consolidation in Canada
If you have multiple debts, consolidation can sound like the obvious answer:
“Put everything together and make one payment.” But one payment does not automatically mean a better financial outcome.
We will compare the major paths including consolidation loans, lines of credit, balance transfers, debt management plans and consumer proposals, and look at the questions you should answer before taking on new debt.
The goal is not to sell you consolidation. The goal is to help you decide whether it actually improves your numbers.
3. Your Debt Payoff Strategy
Avalanche. Snowball. Hybrid.
You have probably heard the terms. But the best strategy is not necessarily the one that looks best on paper. It is the one you can realistically follow.
We will look at the math and the psychology behind each approach so you can choose a strategy that fits how you actually operate.
4. Credit Score: Understand It Before You Try to Fix It
Credit scores can feel mysterious because there is so much misinformation around them. We will break down what matters, what does not, how utilization and payment history fit into the picture, and what rebuilding can look like after financial setbacks.
The goal is not to obsess over a number. The goal is to understand the system so you can make better decisions.
5. From Debt-Free to Financially Free
The final step is the one I care about most.
What happens after the debt is gone? That is when the money you were sending to lenders can start doing something different.
It can build your emergency fund.
It can support your goals.
It can be invested.
It can create choices.
Because the finish line is not simply debt-free. The bigger goal is to be financially free.

A Different Way to Think About Debt
I want this series to change one thing in particular: the way you think about your debt.
Debt is information.
Your balances tell you something about your current cash flow.
Your interest rates tell you where your money is leaking.
Your credit report tells you how the credit system is seeing your behaviour.
Your payment history tells a story about consistency.
And your monthly cash flow tells you what is actually possible.
None of those numbers are a judgment of your worth. They are data.
And once you have the data, you can make decisions. That is where confidence comes from, not from pretending the problem is smaller than it is, but from knowing exactly what you are dealing with and having a plan for what comes next.
Your First Debt & Credit Reset
You do not need to wait for the next post to start. Take 10 minutes this week. Open your banking app and your credit card statements.
Write down:
Every debt.
Every balance.
Every interest rate.
Every minimum payment.
Then add the balances together. Do not judge the number. Just get the number.
If you have been avoiding your debt because you are afraid of what you will see, remember this:
The number is not getting bigger because you finally looked at it. You are simply gaining information. And information gives you options. That is where the reset begins.
What Comes Next
The next article in the series will tackle a question many Canadians with credit card debt eventually face:
Can you negotiate your credit card debt or interest rate, and what should you actually say when you call?
After that, we will tackle another common question:
Should you consolidate your debt?
Those two topics are connected, but they are not interchangeable. Sometimes the smartest move is to negotiate. Sometimes it is to consolidate. Sometimes the right answer is to change the payoff strategy you are already using. And sometimes the numbers tell you that you need a more serious conversation with a qualified professional.
The point of Debt & Credit Reset is to help you understand the difference.
The Money Wise Approach
At The Money Wise, I believe financial education should leave you feeling more capable, not more overwhelmed. You do not need to know everything about money before you start making better decisions. You need the right information, in the right order, with a plan you can actually follow.
That is what this series is designed to provide.
We will look at the numbers.
We will talk about the trade-offs.
We will challenge some common money myths.
And we will focus on the decisions that can change your financial trajectory, not just make you feel productive for a week.
Because the goal is bigger than paying a bill. It is about creating breathing room. It is about rebuilding confidence. It is about giving your future self more options. And ultimately, it is about making your money work harder for the life you actually want.
