What a month in Madrid is teaching me about family, flexibility, financial discipline, and the freedom to choose how I spend my time.

There's something surreal about working from another country while the people you love are just a room away.
I'm in Madrid, spending this season with my family. My laptop is open. I'm keeping up with my professional responsibilities, managing my finances, and continuing to build The Money Wise, but I'm also here. Present. Sharing meals. Having conversations. Watching my family live their everyday lives in a different rhythm than back home.
And every now and then, I look up from my screen and think:
This is part of the life I've been building.
Not because I've "made it." I haven't. My business is still young. There are things I want to experience that aren't in the budget yet, and plenty of uncertainty that comes with building something of your own. But something has shifted. I'm beginning to understand that the life I'm building isn't only about making more money, it's about creating more choices. And one of the most valuable choices I'm learning to have is something I can never earn back: time
Time with family. Time to experience a different culture. Time to keep learning. Time to build something meaningful. Time to live not someday, but while I’m still becoming.
Money can be earned again. Time can't. I don't want to spend my whole life building wealth and then discover that I forgot to live along the way
I Used to Think Success Meant Something Different
For a long time, most of us are taught to measure success in fairly predictable ways: a good career, a higher income, a bigger title, more accomplishments. There's nothing wrong with wanting those things, I've wanted them too. I'm ambitious. I love building. I still have big professional goals.
But somewhere along the way, my definition of success started changing. I began asking a different question:
What am I actually building all of this for?
If we spend decades working hard to build a financially secure life, shouldn't that life eventually give us something beyond a bigger number on a statement? Shouldn't it give us choices about our time, about who we spend it with, about when to slow down and when to say yes? That doesn't mean abandoning ambition. For me, it means making sure ambition serves the life I want, instead of replacing it.
The Luxury I Didn't Expect
The thing I've appreciated most about being in Madrid isn't the sightseeing. It's something simpler: flexibility.
I'm able to work remotely while spending meaningful time with my family. That might sound ordinary in a world where remote work is common, but for me it represents something bigger. There was a time in my corporate career when travelling and spending extended time somewhere else simply wasn't an option.
Now I'm building something of my own, and even though The Money Wise is still very much a work in progress, it's already giving me something I value deeply: the ability to be responsible for my work and present with my family, at the same time. That feels like a different kind of wealth. Not the kind you see on a balance sheet, the kind you experience in your life.

But Being in Spain Doesn't Mean Spending Like I'm Rich
Here's the part of this story I think matters just as much. I love to travel. I love discovering new places, trying different foods, seeing how people live. Travel is education for me.
But I also know what season I'm in. My business is still young, and I have to make decisions based on reality, not just desire. There are places I'd love to explore while I'm here but I've made the conscious decision not to dip into my emergency fund to make that happen.
Why? Because an emergency fund is not a travel fund. It has a job. Just because the money is technically available doesn't mean spending it is the right call. Sometimes being money-wise means saying "not right now" instead of "never." I can explore more of Spain later, when the timing and the budget line up. I don't need to force the dream before I'm financially ready for it and honestly, there's something empowering about that. Financial discipline doesn't mean you don't enjoy your life. It means today's choices don't quietly take away from tomorrow's options.
The Things Money Can't Buy Back
Being here has made me think differently about time especially time with family. I appreciate being with them in Madrid. But I'm also realizing how much I appreciate the time I have with them back home in Toronto. Distance has a funny way of making you notice things: a meal together, a walk, a random Tuesday afternoon. Moments that don't feel important while they're happening, but become meaningful simply because you were there.
We talk a lot about building wealth, investments, savings, debt, retirement, net worth. Those things matter. But there's another asset we rarely put on the balance sheet: time. Unlike money, we can't earn more of it. We can't invest more hours into last year, or put yesterday back into the account.
Family Is Part of Wealth
It's easy to fall into the trap of believing we're sacrificing today entirely for tomorrow, working hard now so we can have more later, saving now so we can enjoy it later, building now so we can finally live later. If we're not careful, we can become so focused on building the future that we forget to participate in the present.
I'm not saying don't plan ahead, please do. Save. Invest. Pay down debt. Build your emergency fund. Those things matter. But I also believe family, relationships, health, and time are part of a wealthy life too. For me, wealth is increasingly about having enough financial stability to make meaningful choices with the time I have and one of those choices is being here, with my family, right now.
I'm Still Becoming
The funny thing is, I don't feel like I've "made it." Not even close. I'm building a business, figuring things out, making trade-offs. There are things I want that I can't justify spending on yet, places I want to go that aren't in this season's budget. And that's okay.
Maybe that's the part of the journey we don't talk about enough: you don't have to be financially free to start building a life that feels more free. Sometimes it starts with small choices, protecting your emergency fund, spending according to your priorities, saying no to something you want because it's not the right time, choosing time with family, still going to the gym even while travelling, eating well while enjoying the occasional treat. None of these choices looks dramatic on its own. Together, they start to shape a life.
Maybe Financial Freedom Is Bigger Than Money
My definition of financial freedom is changing. I used to think about it purely in financial terms, enough money, enough security, not depending on a paycheque. Those things still matter. But I think there's another layer: financial freedom is also about choice.
The choice to spend time with family. To work from somewhere different. To travel when the timing is right. To say no when something doesn't fit your priorities. To build something meaningful. And maybe most importantly the choice to decide what your money is ultimately supposed to make possible.
For me, that's becoming clearer. I want money to create options. I want my work to create flexibility. I want my financial decisions to support the life I'm building, not compete with it.
The Life I'm Building
Maybe that's what Madrid has given me most, not a vacation, not a financial lesson. A little perspective.
I'm sitting here working remotely, building The Money Wise, staying mindful of my finances, and at the same time spending this season of my life with my family. And I'm realizing this is exactly why I want to build financial freedom in the first place not so I can simply have more, but so I can eventually have more choice over what matters.
"I'm not in Madrid because I've made it. I'm in Madrid because I'm building a life that gives me more choices and I'm learning to make those choices wisely."
There will be other trips, other seasons when the budget allows for more and seasons when it doesn't. There will be more growth for TMW, more goals, more learning, and hopefully, more moments like this one.
Because I don't want to spend my whole life building wealth and then discover I forgot to live along the way. I want to build wealth and build a life. Work hard and make room for the people I love. Be financially responsible and enjoy the journey. Dream big and respect the season I'm in.
And maybe that's the most money-wise choice of all: remember that time is wealth too.
A JDR Reflection
Maybe the question isn't simply:
“How much wealth am I building?”
Maybe we should also ask:
“What kind of life is my money helping me build?” What does financial freedom mean to you? More time with family? The ability to travel? Less financial stress? The freedom to change careers? The flexibility to work from somewhere you love? Or simply having enough breathing room to make decisions without constantly worrying about money?
There isn't one right answer, But I think it's worth knowing your answer. Because when you know what you're building for, your money decisions start to look different.
Build the money. Build the life. And don't forget to live along the way.
What are you building your wealth for?
