Two Weeks at the Cottage Reminded Me What Financial Freedom Is Really For
"Sometimes the greatest return on investment isn't measured in dollars. It's measured in moments."
There is something about the quiet that changes you.
For the next two weeks, I'm spending time at a cottage tucked away in Northern Ontario. No crowded schedule. No rush to be somewhere. No endless stream of notifications competing for my attention.
Just the warmth of the sun on my face.
The gentle sound of the lake.
The breeze moving through the trees.
The kind of silence that isn't empty, but full.
It's the kind of place where time seems to slow down just enough for you to notice the things you've been too busy to see.
As I sat outside with my morning coffee, watching the water shimmer under the sunlight, I caught myself doing something I haven't done in a while.
Nothing.
No agenda.
No checklist.
No race against the clock.
Just... being present.
And somewhere between the stillness and the sunshine, I found myself asking a question that has stayed with me ever since.
Why do we work so hard to build wealth?
Not how. Not where to invest. Not which account to contribute to first. But why.
It's a question I've helped people answer for years without always saying it out loud.
As a tax professional, financial educator and the founder of The Money Wise, I've spent countless hours teaching people how to budget, save, reduce taxes, invest wisely and make confident financial decisions.
Those lessons matter. They always will.
But sitting here at this cottage reminded me that financial freedom was never meant to end with a healthy bank account.
It was always supposed to begin there.

The Quiet We Didn't Know We Needed
Some of us have become so comfortable with being busy that we mistake exhaustion for accomplishment.
Our calendars are full. Our inboxes never stop. We answer emails while eating lunch. We check our phones before our feet even touch the floor in the morning. We're constantly chasing the next promotion, the next client, the next investment, the next milestone. We tell ourselves that one day we'll finally slow down. One day we'll enjoy life. One day we'll have enough. But life has a funny way of reminding us that tomorrow isn't guaranteed.
Sometimes all it takes is sitting beside a quiet lake to realize that we've become experts at making a living while forgetting how to truly live.
Nature has a way of stripping away the noise. There are no deadlines in the trees. The lake isn't rushing anywhere. The sun rises without checking anyone's calendar. Everything simply exists exactly as it was created to.
Maybe that's why we find so much peace in places like this. Nature reminds us of a rhythm we've forgotten. A rhythm that says you don't have to constantly prove your worth by staying busy.
Sometimes your greatest growth happens when you finally become still.
"Your greatest breakthroughs often arrive in your quietest moments."
I believe that now more than ever.
When "Busy" Becomes a Lifestyle
Somewhere along the way, society convinced us that slowing down meant falling behind.
We celebrate being busy. We glorify working late. We wear exhaustion like a badge of honour. We've become so productive that we've forgotten how to simply be.
The irony is that many of us are working incredibly hard to build a future we rarely stop to enjoy today.
Think about that for a moment.
How many birthdays have we rushed through because of work? How many sunsets have we missed because we were checking emails? How many conversations were interrupted by a notification?
Money can buy many things. But it cannot buy back missed moments.
That doesn't mean ambition is wrong. I believe in working hard. I believe in building wealth. I believe in investing wisely. But I also believe that if our success costs us our health, relationships, peace or joy, we've misunderstood what wealth was meant to do.

What Nature Quietly Taught Me About Money
Sitting here at the cottage, I've realized something that no financial textbook ever taught me. The richest moments in life are often the simplest ones. Morning coffee overlooking the lake. Reading a book without checking the time. Listening to birds instead of notifications. Watching the sunset instead of another episode. Laughing around a campfire with people you love.
None of those moments required luxury. They required presence. That's when it hit me.
Financial freedom isn't about buying a bigger life. It's about creating enough freedom to fully experience the life you already have.
Money doesn't create happiness. It creates options.Options to spend time with your family. Options to travel. Options to take a break when life feels overwhelming. Options to say yes to experiences instead of constantly saying, "Maybe someday."
That's what we're really building. Not bigger portfolios. Better lives.
The Wisest Financial Decision Isn't Always Financial
As someone who talks about money every day, people often expect my advice to revolve around numbers.
How much to save. How much to invest. How to reduce taxes. Those conversations matter, but this week reminded me that some of the wisest financial decisions begin long before you open your banking app.
They begin by asking better questions. What kind of life do I want? What memories do I want to create? What does enough look like for me?
Is my money supporting my value or just my obligations? Those answers become your financial plan. Because every dollar you earn represents something much bigger than money.
It represents your time. Your energy. Your effort. Your life. Spend it accordingly.
Three Investments That Will Always Pay Dividends
When people hear the word investment, they immediately think about the stock market. I do too, but after this week, I was reminded there are investments that compound in ways no portfolio can measure.
Invest in your future.
Save consistently. Invest wisely. Build wealth patiently. Give your future self choices instead of limitations.
Invest in your relationships.
Money comes and goes. The people sitting beside you around a campfire won't always be there. Create memories while you still can.
Invest in yourself.
Protect your peace. Prioritize your health. Keep learning. Make time for rest because the greatest asset you'll ever manage isn't your investment account.
It's you.
Why I'm Introducing JDR
Over the years, thousands of people have come to The Money Wise looking for tax tips, budgeting advice, investing strategies and practical financial education. And they'll always find that here.
Helping people build confidence with money is still my mission. But over time, I've realized something important. Money is only part of the story. Behind every financial decision is a person. A dream. A family. A purpose. A life they're trying to build.
That's where JDR comes in.
JDR is my voice beyond the spreadsheets. It's where I share the conversations that don't always fit into a budgeting worksheet. Intentional living, mindset, personal growth, gratitude, balance, and the everyday decisions that shape the life behind the numbers.
If The Money Wise teaches you how to build wealth, JDR exists to remind you why. Because financial freedom isn't measured only by what sits in your bank account. It's measured by the life your money allows you to live.
Together, these two parts of my journey share one mission:
To help you build not only financial confidence, but a meaningful life filled with purpose, peace, and freedom. Because true wealth isn't just having more. It's living well.

A Gentle Challenge Before You Go
Before this week ends, I want to invite you to do something that won't cost a single dollar. Spend one hour in nature. Leave your phone behind. Sit by a lake. Walk through a park.
Watch a sunrise. Listen to the wind instead of another podcast.
And ask yourself one simple question:
"Am I building a life I truly enjoy or am I only building a living?"
If that question makes you pause, don't ignore it. Sometimes the answers we're searching for aren't found in another spreadsheet or another financial calculator. Sometimes they're found in the quiet. And maybe that's the greatest lesson these two weeks at the cottage have reminded me of.
Build wealth.
Protect your peace.
Live intentionally.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn't simply to have more money. The goal is to create a life where your money gives you the freedom to spend more time doing what matters most.
That's the kind of wealth worth building.
Build Wealth With Purpose
Building wealth isn't about chasing a number in your bank account. It's about creating choices. It's about reducing stress. It's about protecting the people you love. It's about designing a life that reflects your values, not someone else's definition of success.
